Jn 19: 31-37 The wounds in the side of Jesus as
well as the wounds on his feet and hands remain on his glorified body as marks
of his great love for humankind. Water that flowed from his side indicates the
new life and the life in the Spirit. Blood that flowed indicates the saving
power of Jesus’ death. Later Christian tradition ascribed the sacraments of
Baptism and Eucharist in the water and blood that flowed from the side of
Christ when pierced, symbolically.
